Beaches & Snorkeling

Check out www.stjohnbeachguide.com

Hawksnest Calm, pretty beach close to town with reasonable snorkeling. Watch for turtles.
Trunk Bay Federally run beach. There is a life guard on duty and an entrance fee of $3 but that will also get you in to the Annaberg Ruins that same day and vice versa. There is a snorkel trail. Downside to this beach is the fact that they bring the passengers over from the cruise boats in St. Thomas so it can get crowded. Look for the four large resident tarpon.
Cinnamon Federally run but no charge. There is a campground as well. Kayaks can be rented. Beautiful beach and good snorkeling.
Maho Lovely, if a little narrow, beach next to road.
Francis Harder to get to, so is much less crowded. Good snorkeling along the right hand side of the beach and good for those who are a bit more timid on snorkeling as it gets shallow enough to put your feet down. In the heart of the National Park. There are tables, benches and places to barbeque.
Turner's Point Has canyons. Only accessible by boat.
Hurricane Hole Fish nursery and neat mangroves. Also only accessible by boat.
Waterlemon Cay Turtle hang out. Moderate snorkeling.
Salt Pond Healthy swim out to the reef, but well worth the effort.
Hansen Bay Across from Miss Vie's Snack Shack (she serves her special garlic chicken only on weekends) She charges $2.50pp admission fee for the beach and if she's not open there is an honor box.

Hiking, Shopping, Boats and Groceries

Hiking Reef Bay Trail. Takes you all the way down to Reef Bay. There is a ruined sugar mill there as well. It’s a long hike.
Shopping Mongoose Junction, Wharfside Village and shops near Shipwreck Landing.
Boats

Many and varied. You can rent a Zodiac to go round to the beaches, or a small power boat. Novices may want to hire a captain which is definitely worth the money, since not only do they know all the best snorkel spots and reef danger zones, you are freed up for picture taking and the occasional beer. There are cruises on catamarans and sailing boats, as well as larger motor boat cruises for snorkeling the U.S.VI or B.VI. There are some wonderful places to see and snorkel in B.VI. so it’s worth a day trip.

  • Noah’s Little Arks – 340.693.9030
Groceries Starfish Market, Dolphin Market or Pine Peace Market (this one is tiny and on the way out of Cruz Bay going to the house on the left hand side. Starfish is the big main market. If you make a trip to Red Hook, there is a market just up the street from the ferry dock which is excellent and often has better and cheaper produce and meat variety. They have good wines as well.

  • Miss Lucy's has a full moon party each month.
  • Woody's is a bar hang out for locals and visitors alike and is open until late.
  • Beach Bar has live music on Thursday through Sunday.
  • Uncle Joe's barbeque is really the very best. For those who travel the Caribbean on a regular basis, Joe's uncle was Uncle Ernie at Shoal Bay in Anguilla and the recipe for his dry rub is the same. Unfortunately Uncle Ernie is no longer with us, but Joe carries on the tradition. His combo plate will easily feed two!
  • Up by the Sun Dog Café is a small round bar called the Gecko Gazebo. It's right in the middle of the shops so when you are shopped out, or your significant other wants to wait for you, it's a great place to hang and people watch.
  • Chilly Billy's has a great brunch/breakfast and a great Bloody Mary. Essential after too much rum from the Beach Bar or Woody's the night before!
